My TV Debut, and My Earned Title as “Cat Owner”

As some of you know, due to my constant telling of this story and reposting of pictures, my cat Daphne and I recently made our TV debut together. Maybe you’ve already watched the video I shared on my Facebook page, but not many people know the story behind our spectacular rise to cat/owner stardom. The following is a detailed account of how Daphne and I came to be Discovery Channel stars.

I took Daphne to the vet back in November for booster shots, and was pleasantly surprised at how well behaved she was during the visit. Both the tech and veterinarian commented on how beautiful she was, and how surprised they were at her calmness since she was a feral cat. According to the shelter from which I rescued her, she was born into a house that had over 20 cats. She even had her ear tipped, a practice that is performed to identify a cat as fixed, and to avoid needless trapping and surgery. I had no idea that this was even a thing in the stray cat world! My bf likes to call her Evander Holyfield. I call her my perfect princess.

As we’re finishing up at the vet, the doctor mentions, “We’re filming a piece here at the office for the Discovery Channel on being a cat-friendly practice – Daphne is so beautiful and calm, would you consider bringing her in and both of you being on TV?”

Um, did you just ask me if I wanted to be on TV, with my cat? Do you KNOW that my two dreams are to be famous, and to have done nothing to gain that fame other than having a cute cat? Yeahhhh I’ll do the TV show, do you have a full contract I can sign with Discovery Channel so I can ride my cat’s coattails to the top?

So after a definitive yes, I was signed up to participate in something that I knew very little about other than “TV,” “Discovery Channel,” and “lots of cats.” So yeah…I was 100% on board.

The day of the shoot was really fun, I was mic’d and then we filmed a few scenes, including me first meeting with the vet tech, me completely ad-libbing an interview portion, and, my favorite, a close up on Daphne and I as we snuggled and I gently stroked her head. The camera man even said, “let’s zoom in closer on her hand petting the cat.” Pure TV gold.

I walked away with a $10 Starbucks gift card, and a cat magnet and cat potholder. I wasn’t expecting anything other than a thank you! Daphne received rave reviews from the camera and sound guys for her incredible performance. I guess I was OK, too.

Here’s a link to the clip, the show is called Innovations, hosted by Ed Begley Jr. (unfortunately I didn’t get to meet the one and only Stan Sitwell). Click here to enjoy the informative, entertaining, and riveting segment about cats.
